Hay River athletes earn spots at AWG

A number of athletes from Hay River earned their way to the 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games at territorial trials which wrapped up Dec. 9 in Yellowknife and Fort Smith.

According to information from Sport North, they include:

  •  Tyrell Wilgosh and Zackary Horton, midget male hockey;
  • Layne Leonard, Abby Webster and Bryn Hill, junior female hockey;
  • Kaden Beck and Declan Munro, bantam male hockey;
  • Brianna Goodwin, juvenile female futsal;
  • Fiona Huang, intermediate female futsal;
  • Zoey Walsh, Julie Squires-Rowe and Nicole Griffiths, junior female curling;
  • Dane Dupuis, men's volleyball;
  • Jacqueline Larocque, women's volleyball.

Two coaches from Hay River were also selected – Trudie Walsh in curling and John Hill in hockey.

At territorial trials for ski and snowshoe biathlon in Hay River, Michaela Crook made the NWT team in junior female snowshoe biathlon and her brother Gaius Crook earned a spot in juvenile male ski biathlon.

Trials were held for nine sports: volleyball, hockey, figure skating, gymnastics, biathlon, futsal, basketball, cross-country skiing and curling.

Territorial trials in other sports will be held in January.

The Arctic Winter Games will take place in Hay River and Fort Smith from March 18 to 24, 2018.
