A Halloween 5K Fun Run is returning for its second year on Oct. 27.

"It's just a good community event," said organizer Sherry Ringuette. "It allows people to keep moving. There actually are a lot of runners in Hay River. We don't often get together as a group."

The Halloween 5K Fun Run also invites participants to dress up in costumes.

"Everybody enjoys getting into costume," said Ringuette.

Anyone just dressed up as a runner or walker is also welcomed.

Last year, the run attracted 18 participants, many of them in costume.

Ringuette noted the five-kilometre distance is good for anyone who wants to participate.

"It's a nice distance," she said. "The course is open for an hour, so walkers can do it."

Plus, she said people can also bring along children in strollers.

"There's lots of time for those of us that are at the slower end of the pack," she said.

Last year, the fun run for Halloween was the first such event organized by Ringuette and she also put together a run on New Year's Day.

She noted the Halloween 5K Fun Run is returning because some runners have requested it, which she takes as an indication they enjoyed last year's event.

The Halloween fun run has been organized in partnership with the Town of Hay River.

Registration for the run will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 27 at the Rec Centre and the run will begin at 10 a.m.

The run starts goes from the Rec Centre to a turnaround at the Welcome to Hay River sign and then back to the Rec Centre.

Ringuette herself did not run last year as she was busy with organizational duties.

"I am going to run this year," she said, explaining other volunteers will be looking after registration and the turnaround site. "So I can run."

She also hopes to be in costume.
