Fate of old town hall/fire hall debated

Town council has been told that it could sell the old town hall/fire hall if it wishes.

The future of the building – closed since July 2014 because of air quality concerns – arose in discussion of this year's capital budget.

The discussion was prompted by $300,000 in the budget for studies and remediation work in advance of possible demolition.

Earlier this month, deputy mayor Donna Lee Jungkind suggested that the town would be further ahead by selling the building for a nominal fee.

Council asked administration to look into whether the town could sell the building as is as opposed to undertaking an abatement and demolition project.

"We consulted with legal and the opinion came back that yes the town is able to sell the town hall building as is with full disclosure of hazardous materials," said Judy Goucher, the senior administrative officer with the municipality, at the council meeting on Jan. 16. "It's somewhat more complicated than that, but the simple answer is yes with full disclosure."

Coun. Kandis Jameson suggested the $300,000 come off this year's capital budget until council has a plan on what to do with the building and property, either to sell it or to demolish and rebuild.

Jungkind agreed, noting it is unrealistic to think that anything would be happening with the building this summer.

"So maybe we could at least just push it out one more year," she said of the $300,000 allocated in the capital budget.

A show-of-hands consensus of councillors was to remove the $300,000 in funding.

Council will officially vote on the capital budget on Jan. 30.

Town administration was also asked to prepare a detailed plan with options for demolition and options for a future town hall.

Since April of 2015, the municipal offices have been located in leased space once occupied by True Value Hardware.
