Council may remove service road funding

Funding to move and improve a pedestrian walkway on the Super A service road may be removed from the town's annual capital budget.

That was the consensus among councillors at a Jan. 16 meeting, although a final vote on the capital budget is expected on Jan. 30.

It has $180,000 allocated for the work.

However, council believes the GNWT should help pay for the new walkway because it leads to a crosswalk over Highway 2 to the health centre.

"If you leave a dollar figure in your budget, then you're sending a message to any department, territorial or federal, to say that you've got money," Mayor Brad Mapes advised council. "So you're better off to make the decision to remove it."

The walkway issue arose in council in 2016 when some councillors described it as dangerous.

The existing walkway on the east side of the road passes in front of businesses, where vehicles enter and leave.

The proposal is to create a walkway on the west side of the road.
