SPORTS CHECK: Time for some kicks

It's Super Soccer time in the city and the junior edition will kick off this afternoon at the St. Joseph and William McDonald school gymnasiums with the Grade 6 boys and girls divisions starting things out.

The Grade 7 and 8 divisions will get going tomorrow at the St. Patrick and Weledeh school gymnasiums. The Fieldhouse is also being used for games.
The Yellowknife teams – Allain St. Cyr, St. Joe's, St. Pat's, William McDonald, Range Lake North, Mildred Hall and Weledeh – are being joined by teams from Hay River, Fort Smith, Lutsel K'e, Behchoko, Inuvik and Fort Simpson along with Kugluktuk, Cambridge Bay and Rankin Inlet from Nunavut and Haines Junction, Yukon.

The round-robin for all divisions will go until Saturday, when the playoffs begin, with the championship games for all six divisions happening on Sunday.

Team North set for action

The 2018 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships are set to being on May 2 in Membertou, N.S., and Team North will be in action.

All three territories are coming together again to take on the rest of the country and there will be some Yellowknife representation on this year's boys and girls rosters. The girls team features Sahara Lafferty and Danica Taylor while goaltender Liam Tereposky will be the only boy from the capital this year.

In terms of the coaching staff, Neco Towtongie of Yellowknife will serve as an assistant coach for the boys while Kaylee Grant will be an assistant for the girls.

Coaches announced for nationals

Basketball NWT has announced the head coaches for its teams heading to the Canada Basketball 15U Nationals later this year.

Cole Marshall will take the reigns of the girls team that will be travelling to Fredericton, N.B., while Matt Craig will be in charge of the boys squad heading to Kamloops, B.C. Both of those tournaments are happening in August.

The girls tryouts will start next month with the boys having theirs in June.
