Community members in Fort Simpson are pitching in to get the Seven Spruce Golf Course ready for the season.
In the annual community event, which was scheduled to take place April 28 this year, community members were invited to the course to help with the cleanup.
"Please bring yard tools such as rakes, lawn mowers/mulchers, garbage bags, etc," stated a bulletin advertising the event on social media. "Your help is very much appreciated to get our golf season off to an early start."
Those who volunteered were eligible to get five per cent off their membership, and were treated to a barbecue.

Spring Clean-Up set in Fort Smith

The annual Residential Spring Clean-Up will take place in Fort Smith from May 14 to May 25.
Tipping fees will be waived at the landfill site for residential households for the duration of the spring clean-up.
A registration fee of $40 per household must be submitted at Fort Smith Town Hall before May 24.

Community celebrates card deck release

All of Fort Providence was invited to Deh Gah School May 3 for a gathering and celebration.
"Introducing and celebrating the success of a Dene Zhati Card Deck that can be used at home and in the classroom as an educational tool that can be used in everyday learning," states a bulletin on social media advertising the event.
The card deck is a Dene Zhati language educational resource developed with the school in partnership with organizations TakingITGlobal and Connected North. The resource will be for students, teachers and families in Fort Providence.
"There will be a drum dance following the launch of the card deck and great acknowledgement of the contributors of such a fruitful and exciting resource for our community," stated the bulletin.

Youth funding challenge
Inuvialuit Settlement Region
The Regional Youth Advisory Group at the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) is encouraging youth across the ISR to submit ideas for community events or initiatives that need funding.
The Youth Funding Challenge invites youth within ISR communities to collaborate and brainstorm before they apply for funding. If a group's idea is approved and they successfully follow through on their plan, they can win a variety of prizes that includes Apple Airpods, iTunes gift cards, Beats headphones and more.
Ideas or programs such as community gatherings that can be hosted monthly can receive up to $250 in funding.
Bi-monthly initiatives such as building a community garden could receive up to $750, while quarterly ideas that require a budget are able to receive up to $1,500 in funding.
The deadline to apply is June 30.

Regular drumming workshop kicks off

Those wanting to learn or improve their drumming skills in Fort Simpson now have a place to do so regularly.
Drumming Workshop is now scheduled to take place every Monday and Wednesday, weather permitting.
"Come and learn a song or two on the drum!" states a bulletin on social media advertising the ongoing workshop.
The workshop is scheduled to be led by Angus Ekanali and Olinto Beaulieu, and to take place between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the Liidlii Kue First Nation wall tent outdoor board room.
Everybody 10 and older are welcome, whatever their skill level.
"Emphasis will be on learning three drum songs as a group and to support each other by listening and showing respect to one another," states the bulletin.

Canoe excursion opportunity

Youth ages 15 to 25 have until May 21 to apply for an exciting opportunity to travel from Fort Providence to Fort Simpson by canoe to participate in the upcoming Dehcho Assembly.
The opportunity, set for June 10 to 28, is open to Dehcho First Nations youth.
"Dehcho First Nations and Deh Gah School, supported by Dechinta are leading a youth regional canoe excursion, elder and youth gathering, and then youth participation in the Dehcho assembly," states the bulletin advertising the event.
Participants are expected to gain a deep knowledge of Dene values, law and understanding, as well as on-the-land skills, Dene history, leadership skills, water safety, group work, presentation skills and much more.
Applications can be made through the Dehcho First Nations office.

Inuvialuit seeking five elders for workshop
Inuvialuit Settlement Region
The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) is looking for five elders from each ISR community to participate in a three-day workshop in Inuvik from June 18 to 20.
According to regional health liaison Alecia Lennie, one of the main goals of the workshop is to record and preserve the elders' traditional knowledge.
The workshop will allow elders to become more visible in their communities, and provide them with more opportunities to engage and connect with community members.
Elders who are around 65-years-old or older are invited to apply.
The deadline to apply is May 31.

Workshop aims to prevent child sexual abuse

An event in Fort Simpson is taking aim at an important issue.
Prevent It! Taking Action to Stop Child Sexual Abuse is an upcoming "important information education presentation" for everyone 18 years and older.
The event is set to take place May 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the rec centre.
The workshop is being organized by Little Warriors, a national organization committed to the awareness, prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse, states its website.
Among its mission is to provide awareness, prevention strategies, information about healing and support and a treatment facility.

Care facility opens doors for Mother's Day

Sahtu Dene Necha Ko Long Term Care Facility in Norman Wells was set to open its doors for the community to spend time with their loved ones this month.
Family and Friends Night was scheduled for May 9 at 6:30 p.m., and was meant to celebrate Mother's Day May 12.
"Come join friends and loved ones for a fun evening of games, karaoke, and music," stated a bulletin on social media.
