Alberta bound

Yellowknife's Terry Burns is now moving onto the Alberta portion of his trek across Canada to bowl 100 lanes in 100 days in celebration of five-pin bowling's 100th anniversary.

Burns finished the Saskatchewan leg of his tour on Nov. 18 with a stop in Swift Current. He bowled in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge and will continue through to Calgary and Drumheller in the next couple of days.

"The crowds were great in Saskatchewan," he said. "They were cheering for everyone."

Gilday gets set for China

Yellowknife's Michael Gilday is about to close out another training session in Calgary in preparation for the Asian leg of the World Cup short-track speed skating circuit.

Gilday, who won two silver medals at the last stop in Vancouver, will travel with his teammates to Beijing, China for the next set of races, scheduled to begin on Nov. 28. Following the Beijing stop, the team will head to Nagano, Japan for the final set of races, which will begin on Dec. 5.

Speed skating down south

The Yellowknife Speed Skating Club will send a group of 28 skaters from the ages of eight to 15 to Edmonton for a one-day speed skating meet on Nov. 22. Skaters will compete in an ability-style, meaning skaters will be judged on ability and not age.

"Many of the skaters will be attending their first out-of-town competition, which will make it exciting for them," said coach Shane Clark.

The Yellowknife skaters will be up against competitors from Alberta and British Columbia in various distances throughout the day.

Still want to run?

The season for the Yellowknife Multisport Club isn't over just yet. The club is hosting one more event for 2008 called The 12 Ks of Christmas.

The event is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army and will take place on Dec. 13.

Contact club president Heather Scott for more details.

Established in 1945, News/North covered the 61 communities comprising the Northwest Territories, a 1,400.000 square mile region north of the 60th parallel. The region made up the present Northwest Territories, plus the area which, in April 1999, became the new territory of Nunavut. Since then, News/North has evolved into two separate publications, each serving its respective territory. In addition, the Yellowknifer, Deh Cho Drum, Inuvik Drum and Kivalliq News serve regional interests in both territories.
