First North expands services

First North Productions can now provide services for as many as 80 delegates in a conference setting.

The Northern, aboriginal-owned company recently invested $25,000 in new equipment, including more translation equipment, which will allow it to take on larger meetings as well as smaller ones.

Executive producer John Gon said First North's expanded services will foster more competition in the local market.

"It's going to bring prices down a bit," he said.

First North provides a range of audio and video services, including sound systems, translation, transcription, and editing.

Spice up your nails

Diamond Nails now has 65 colours of gel nails available, including 14 colours that just arrived this week.

"Usually the gel nails are very limited. It's only clear and white," said salon co-owner Thai Lu. "Now the bright colours are the most popular choices."

Some of the new options include bright greens and oranges as well as others with glitter.

The salon is also gearing up for Halloween, with festive polish packs and air brush nails available.

Business license numbers down

The City of Yellowknife issued 144 new business licenses from January to August of this year, bringing the total number of active business licenses to 2,603, including 785 home-based businesses.

But the number of active business licenses has actually decreased by 113 since January.

Bill Fandrick, manager of the city's inspections division, said that's not necessarily indicative that there are fewer businesses in the city now than there were eight months ago. It's possible that some businesses have expired licenses that they are late in renewing.

Coffee shop adds daily special

Starting this week, Javaroma's Centre Square Mall location is introducing a new drink of the day special.

"Most of our customers are the same people every day. We just want to mix it up for them, try some new things," said Diane Wiseman, manager of the mall location.

Some of the daily specials will feature new flavours to coincide with the holidays, such as pumpkin spice latte for Halloween or candy cane latte for Christmas.

Javaroma's mall location will also be adding some snacks from its main location in the NorthwesTel Tower.
