One world, one groove

Members of the Yk Groove Crew plan to spin a diverse selection of tracks at Friday's Global Groove 4, a dance party at the Top Knight featuring contemporary music from around the planet.

Palestinian hip hop on screen

Slingshot Hip Hop is a 2008 documentary that amplifies the voices of Palestinian youth living in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel. The young artists use hip-hop culture to address class and gender differences and to bridge political boundaries.

The film is presented by Cinema Politica Yellowknife in co-operation with Focus on Palestine. Middle eastern desserts and teas will be served and discussion is encouraged following the presentation.

The film begins at 7 p.m. tonight at Northern United Place.

Live from New York, it's Saturday morning

Capitol Theatre broadcasts a live performance of Puccini's final opera, Turandot, on Saturday morning. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the opera begins at 11 a.m.

Opera star Maria Guleghina portrays the title role, a Chinese princess who beheads suitors who fail to solve her riddles. The drama is being staged at the famous Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Tina Roy in the spotlight

Singer/songwriter Tina Roy performs at Javaroma tomorrow evening. Roy and her acoustic guitar share the cafe stage from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m.

The 22-year-old Metis recording artist will play songs off her third album, Lessons in Anatomy.

The free concert is organized by Music NWT as part of the group's ongoing featured performer series.

Established in 1945, News/North covered the 61 communities comprising the Northwest Territories, a 1,400.000 square mile region north of the 60th parallel. The region made up the present Northwest Territories, plus the area which, in April 1999, became the new territory of Nunavut. Since then, News/North has evolved into two separate publications, each serving its respective territory. In addition, the Yellowknifer, Deh Cho Drum, Inuvik Drum and Kivalliq News serve regional interests in both territories.
