A Christmas craft sale is being held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Abe Miller Building. It is being organized by the Yellowknife Association for Community Living.

"It's a very social event," said Fleurette Spreen, co-ordinator of the association's Skills, Training and Community Inclusion services.

The program provides adults with learning disabilities opportunities to work and interact in their community, including delivering their popular poster service, courier work and recycling runs.

On Saturday, the association's clients will staff the winter cafe. They will serve vegetarian and traditional chili, hot dogs and bannock alongside more than a dozen vendors. Money raised will go toward a Christmas luncheon for the clients.

A second Christmas craft sale is being held at the Baker Community Centre from 1 until 4 p.m. That sale is organized by the Yellowknife Seniors Society.

Among the 21 vendors are textile artist Sandra Taylor, who will display her intricate needlework, 95-year-old author Mike Krutko, who will sign copies of his 2004 book Mike Krutko's Amazing Adventures, and painter Bonnie Findlay Fournier, who will offer a selection of framed prints and hand painted wooden ptarmigan ornaments.

"I have a lot of work to do to get ready," Fournier said.

Indian food will be served throughout the sale and members of the society will staff a bake table with apple pie, peanut butter cookies and other classics.

"The bake table is always popular," said the society's executive director, Marjorie Sandercock. "It always sells out in the first hour."

Tickets for the $5,000 Diavik diamond raffle will be sold early in the afternoon.

Visitors will also be invited to cross the street to the Aven Manor long term care facility to bid on a silent auction from 1 until 4 p.m.
