Christmas crafts for a good cause

Artists and crafts folk are helping some local organizations reach out to the public tomorrow.
A Christmas craft sale is being held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Abe Miller Building. It is being organized by the Yellowknife Association for Community Living.
"It's a very social event," said Fleurette Spreen, co-ordinator of the association's Skills, Training and Community Inclusion services. News LinkContinued

New film from Dennis Allen

Dennis Allen's feature-length documentary is about Fort McPherson, a Teetl'it Gwich'in community in the Northwest Territories, and its citizen-run radio station. A resilient expression of Aboriginal pride, CBQM serves a far-flung and loyal listenership – and plays the best damn country music in the Mackenzie Delta. News LinkWatch more

Cozy Christmas

Janet Pacey released a new quilt design in time for the holiday season. Caribou Christmas features Pacey's colourful cartoon characters in the form of Santa Claus and a red-nosed caribou.

The throw quilt pattern can also be created in single square-foot blocks or as a wall hanging or table runner. It includes two caribou and one Santa block along with suggestions for creating various versions of the design.

Pacey's patterns are available at Quilter's Getaway. The artist also has work displayed at Down To Earth Gallery and other venues.

Music video workshop

Intermediate and advanced independent filmmakers interested in producing music videos for Northern artists have an opportunity to learn from a Vancouver-based professional early next month.

Music video director John Poliquin will lead a two-day workshop on Dec. 4 and 5. Poliquin will introduce the process of making a music video from start to finish. Subjects covered include an in-depth look at creative directing and rhythmic effects, writing treatments, organizing a vision, visual effects and post production.

To register, contact Jeremy Emerson at Western Arctic Moving Pictures.

Festive song and dance

Members of Black Umfolosi will appear at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre next week. The Zimbabwean ensemble is touring the country with their joyous harmonies and rhythmic movements to help communities celebrate the festive season.

The performances begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, and Friday, Dec. 4.

Karaoke holiday

The weekly karaoke nights at Hot Shots Pub will return on Fridays after Boxing Day. The bar is booked solid with Christmas parties from now until late December.

Established in 1945, News/North covered the 61 communities comprising the Northwest Territories, a 1,400.000 square mile region north of the 60th parallel. The region made up the present Northwest Territories, plus the area which, in April 1999, became the new territory of Nunavut. Since then, News/North has evolved into two separate publications, each serving its respective territory. In addition, the Yellowknifer, Deh Cho Drum, Inuvik Drum and Kivalliq News serve regional interests in both territories.
