Great Slave Classic Old-timer hockey tournament

The Great Slave Classic Old-timer Hockey tournament is scheduled to take place at the Multiplex Nov. 22 to 25.

The tournament will feature Old-timer Hockey League teams facing off throughout the weekend at the Shorty Brown rink.

Although the tournament is only open to local teams, the league's annual Balsillie Cup tournament in April will be open to outside competition.

Monday night pool

Winners for the After 8 Billiards Monday night open pool tournament Nov. 12 are as follows:

Hand out for sports

Eight Yellowknife athletes will receive $1,000 in financial assistance as recipients of the Sport North scholarship program this month.

The program assists athletes that have demonstrated academic excellence and dedication to sport and volunteer commitment.

Preference was given to students who excelled in physical education and sport programs.

The recipients are Amanda Bengts, Chris Bennington, Jazzan Braden, Luke Coedy Ashley Green, Jeannie Mathison, Aaron Wells and Leslie Vikse.

Moving on

Scouts will take a look at what Hay River has to offer as selection continues for the women's hockey team to represent the NWT and Nunavut at the Canadian Western Shield Women's Hockey Championship next April.

Tuesday's Hay River camp will follow up an initial September session in Yellowknife to check out local talent.

A camp is also scheduled in Iqaluit on Wednesday.

Organizer Amy Doerksen said the final team roster should be announced by Dec. 1.

Ultimate faceoff

The high school hockey rivalry between Sir John Franklin and St. Patrick high schools will culminate in the annual Wade Hamer Challenge Cup next week.

Four high school men's and women's team will either try to earn or defend their titles when they face off in their games at the Multiplex Nov. 21.

Last year, St. Patrick high school took the cup in the men's division, while Sir John claimed the title for the women's division.

Five pin showdown

The NWT 5-Pin Bowlers' Association is hosting city championships at the Kingpin Centre this weekend.

Swim meet

The Polar Bear Swim Club will compete in its first out-of-town competition of the season in Hay River this weekend.

The swimmers will race in events Nov. 17 to 18 for the first time in Hay River's new pool.

Curling at nationals

The Northwest Territories will be represented at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships in Kitchener, Ont. Nov. 10 to 18.

Manny Arey will skip the team, with Evelyn Storr as vice, Robert McLeod second, and Judy McLeod as lead.

Results will be posted on the tournament website.

Lining up the stars

The McDonald's In the Line Up online contest is back to give two minor hockey players in the territories a chance to be on the ice with National Hockey League players.

The Northern players will be among 12 across Canada to win a round trip to Atlanta, Georgia, to see the 2008 NHL All-Star game Jan. 27, and join the players on the ice during the national anthem.

Parents or guardians can enter hockey players between the ages of seven and 12 until Dec. 9 at the contest website.
