Inuklak grads celebrate

A large gathering of friends and family members celebrated the class of 2008 during graduation ceremonies at Inuglak school in Whale Cove this past month.

Receiving their Grade 12 diplomas were Lazarus Teenar, Karen Adjuk and Joefrey Okalik.

A number of special guests attended the ceremony, including Nunavut deputy premier and Rankin Inlet South/Whale Cove MLA Levinia Brown.

Art display

The Macdonald Stewart Art centre at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ont., is currently featuring an exhibition on Inuit art entitled Inuit Art Acquisitions.

The exhibition will run at the art centre until July 20.

Among the exhibits are a number of works by internationally renowned artist Jessie Oonark of Baker Lake (1906-1985).

The Macdonald Stewart Art Centre was presented with eight of Oonark's rare early sketchbooks, circa 1968.

The books were a gift from Samuel and Esther Sarick and contained 79 Oonark drawings.

The current exhibition features a selection of Oonark's sketchbooks which have never before been put on public display.

Awards day

A special awards day ceremony was held to bring the school year to a close at Sakku school in Coral Harbour earlier this month.

Numerous awards were handed out in various categories for each grade in the school.

The proud recipients of a pair of brand-new bicycles were Crista Emiktowt and Kathy Ottokie.

Emiktowt won the Sikuliaq Award for the highest achievement in Inuktitut, while Ottokie captured the Tooma Award for the highest achievement in English.

Cleaning up

Hamlet workers and employees from a number of other local organizations were given a half-day off this past Friday to take part in a full-community spring cleanup in Rankin Inlet.

The event followed the hamlet's recent initiative of paying $5 per bag of garbage in its ongoing efforts to rid the community of a good portion of its roadside garbage.

Open house

Kivalliq detachments of the RCMP were scheduled to join their counterparts across Nunavut in holding an open house at their stations this past Saturday in celebration of National Aboriginal Day.

The RCMP officers planned to serve up tasty barbecues and cold refreshments during the special day to thank the communities for their continued support during the past year.

The RCMP also looked forward to using the occasion to distribute pamphlets highlighting potential employment opportunities for Inuit members of the RCMP.
