Petro-Canada station closing

Petro-Canada's gas station on Old Airport Road, located in front of Wal-Mart, will close at the end of the month, according to Shawn Delaney, manager of Matonabee Petroleum Ltd, Yellowknife's Petro-Canada agent.

The station has two full-time employees and four part time workers, according to full-timer Richard Normandin.

Architects to converge in Yellowknife

The Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada will hold a conference in Yellowknife from June 28 to July 1 that will draw people from all over Canada.

The society's membership includes structural and landscape architects, architectural historians and planners, sociologists, ethnologists and specialists in such fields as heritage conservation and landscape history.

"Usually the event is held in big cities like Montreal or Toronto," said organizer Zhila Nadji of Yellowknife architectural firm Nadji Architects.

Tyhee purchase

Tyhee Development Corporation has purchased the Oro Lake Property, covering 338 acres adjacent to its BigSky Property north of Yellowknife, from Norwest Explorers Ltd.

Tyhee paid Norwest $20,000 as a one-time payment for a 100 per cent interest in the leases.

Gold was first found on Oro Lake by Lynx Yellowknife Gold Mines in the 1930s.

Alvarez steps down

Pierre Alvarez has stepped down as president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

Alvarez is the former deputy minister of energy with the Government of the Northwest Territories and former CEO of NWT Power Corp.

Under his watch, the oil and gas sector went from representing 9 per cent of the Toronto Stock Exchange's value in 1999 to 32.7 per cent today.
