Today's News Briefs Fourth wettest June Environment Canada said Yellowknife had the forth wettest June on record. Yellowknife received almost 50 mm of rain, normally it gets only 26.9 mm in June. However, the overall percipitation for 2008 is only slightly above average in the city. - Ben Morgan Traffic lights repaired Traffic lights at the intersections Range Lake Road and Borden Drive on Old Airport Road were working again last Friday evening. The lights were out of commission for nearly seven days following a June 28 lightning storm. City officials had to wait for new parts to be shipped from Toronto after lightning strikes "fried" the traffic lights said city engineer Chris Greencorn. The parts cost roughly $5,000 and the city flew in an electrician consultant from Grande Prairie to fix the lights. Greencorn said a team of electricians are currently researching "surge suppression" technology that would help prevent the lights from being damaged in the event of power failures due to ligtning strikes. - Katie May Position open for RCMP advisory committee The city is looking for a member of the public to make recommendations about RCMP enforcement by serving on the Yellowknife Area Policing Advisory committee. The committee has one vacant spot and the city is asking those interested to submit an application to city hall or to apply online at yellowknife.ca by July 11. - Katie May Summer cafe open The Yellowknife Association for Community Living has opened the Summer Cafe again this year. It operates on weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Abe Miller Building located on 53 Street. Stop by and take a seat on the patio or call ahead for a reservation. - Cara Loverock
