Nunavut's first Olympic volunteer
James McCarthy Northern News Services Monday, July 6, 2009 IQALUIT - Nunavut will have at least one volunteer at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. Dallas Anderson of Iqaluit has been selected by the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC) as one of the first 13 volunteers for the games, which begin February 12. Anderson said it was an amazing feeling when he got confirmation. "I was excited when I found out I was chosen," he said. "I just want to be part of the games and now I am." Anderson was selected from over 64,000 hopeful applications received by Workopolis, the company handling the volunteer selection for the games. He said it was a long process. "I submitted my application last summer," he said. "After that, I played the waiting game until I had the telephone interview about three months ago. I kind of had an idea I had it after that." Anderson was one of the lucky ones who will be working in what he loves to do. He will be working at Canada Hockey Place, the site of the gold medal game. Anderson said it was a natural choice for him. "I like to volunteer whenever hockey is on and I played professionally in the United States for a number of years," he said. "You don't get to choose what you want to do. It's chosen for you. Lucky for me, it turned out to be hockey and I'm happy. Maybe I'll get to see a game or two, maybe even the gold medal game. That would be exciting." Certain volunteers are required to attend courses in order to receive the proper training needed to do the job. Anderson said he will most likely not have to do that. "I don't have any certain places or courses to attend for my position," he said. "None in Nunavut, but I'm not 100 per cent sure. It all depends on where you are and I haven't been told about anything." Like all volunteers, Anderson will be responsible for getting to Vancouver and finding accommodation while he's there. He said he'll figure that out when the time comes. "I don't know my itinerary yet, but I'll book my flight when the time comes," he said. "I'm just excited to be a part of all of this. It's the Olympics and it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing."
