Park expansion celebration The expansion of the Nahanni National Park Reserve will be celebrated in Fort Simpson today, July 16. Dehcho First Nations and Parks Canada are co-hosting the event that will start with a fire feeding ceremony at 12 p.m. at the arbour. There will also be a community luncheon and speeches. The event will end with a drum dance at 7 p.m. Deh Cho representatives for the Olympic Games Both artists and youth will represent the Deh Cho at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games in Vancouver. Cheryl Bertrand, Calvin Lomen, Tyson McLeod and Ernie Timbre of Fort Liard along with Malorey Nirlungayuk of Fort Simpson, Shawna McLeod of Fort Providence, Vanessa Sanguez of Jean Marie River, and Bhreagh Ingarfield of Nahanni Butte are among the 40 people who were chosen for the NWT Youth Ambassadors Program. Ten visual artists from across the territory have also been chosen to showcase their work at the games. Karen Cumberland from Fort Liard who makes birch bark baskets and John Sabourin of Fort Simpson who is a carver and painter will represent the Deh Cho. Anniversary yearfor golf tournament The Seven Spruce Golf Course will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of a popular tournament next weekend. The course's Scramble Tournament sponsored by Kingland Ford will be held from July 25 to 26. The event will follow a four-person best ball format. Each team will complete 18 holes each day for a total of 36. Tee times are set for 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., said Val Gendron, one of the organizers. The tournament will also include a steak dinner on Saturday night and prizes for participants, Gendron said. Deh Cho representative A Fort Simpson resident has been selected to serve on the Aboriginal Employees Advisory Committee. Connie McNab, the regional homecare co-ordinator for Dehcho Health and Social Services, is one of six territorial government employees who will serve a two-year term on the committee. McNab is the representative for the Deh Cho region. The mandate of the committee is to increase the number of indigenous aboriginal employees hired and retained by the territorial government. Celebrating parks Liidlii Kue/Fort Simpson The 20th anniversary of Canada Parks Day is being celebrated in Fort Simpson on July 18 with a series of events at the Fort Simpson Territorial Park's kitchen shelter. Registration will start at 11 a.m. with the scavenger hunt and other games following half an hour later. Travelling for a new sport Tthek'ehdeli/Jean Marie River A group of students from Jean Marie River came to Fort Simpson on July 14 to participate in a lacrosse clinic. Working for a living Tthenaago/Nahanni Butte Eight summer students are hard at work in Nahanni Butte. Floor hockey is being offered all this week from 7 to 9 p.m. A summer picnic Deh Gah Got'ie Koe/Fort Providence The recreation department is organizing a day trip for youth to Kakisa on July 18 for a picnic. The youth centre is offering a summer play program this week from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. daily. Happy belated birthday to Alessandra Canadien who turned a year older on July 13. Call for participation Acho Dene Koe/Fort Liard All Acho Dene Koe First Nation members are encouraged to attend the monthly chief and council and membership meetings. The next meetings are scheduled for July 15 at 7 p.m. at the hamlet office and July 22 at 7 p.m. at the community hall. A summer cleaning Pehdzeh Ki/Wrigley Summer students in Wrigley have progressed to painting and picking up garbage as part of the preparations for the annual gathering in August.
