Resolving to go to the gym
The Racquet Club is experiencing a spike in activity, and assistant manager Jack Banic said he believes he knows why.
"I think it's fair to say a lot of it is due to New Year's resolutions," said Banic. "You can definitely tell. Even from a week ago, it's quite a bit busier."
The surge, which Banic says is common for the month of January, is only expected to grow.
"I think some people are still out of town, so we're not getting the full brunt of it right now."
Canadian Pizza open
Yellowknife institution Canadian Pizza is still open for business every day but Sunday, despite the "For Sale" sign that's been hanging in the front window since the summer, said Sandy Valeras, wife of the owner, George Valeras.
"(The business and the building are) for sale, but we're still open. We're not closed," said Sandy.
The Valeras want to retire after 25 years of pizza making, but they have not found a buyer yet.
Sandy said it will still be hard to let go of the business when the time comes, because business is still good.
"Our regular customers know we are here," she said.
Calendars sold out
The two dozen or so 2008 Cape Dorset Calendars stocked by Northern Images in December have already flown off the shelves, said Maki Mazan, a sales associate with the store.
"They are very popular," said Mazan. "There isn't one left."
The calendars feature prints created by Cape Dorset artists in the years 2005 and 2006 and are so popular they attract the same "regulars," added Mazan.
"They come back every year to buy it," she said.
New guy, old Yellowknifer
Bruce Lewis began working at Polar Tech in September, but this isn't his first time in Yellowknife.
"I was here for one summer back in the '60s," he said. "I wish I had taken more pictures while I was here, because the place has grown so much."
He was a student with Geological Survey Canada, and spent most of his time in the bush.
"I have slides that I can't find," he said. "It would be kind of neat to see those pictures, versus the way things are now."
