Celebrating diversity

Musicians helped the community celebrate freedom of expression and the 29 other articles protected in the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the weekend. The second annual Amnesty International coffee house filled the auditorium at Northern United Place on Saturday night. Community members of all ages and backgrounds enjoyed food and fair-trade tea and coffee while listening to an evening-long concert organized by multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Churcher.   News LinkContinued

Folk deadline approaches

The 29th annual Folk on the Rocks music festival in Yellowknife is still accepting applications from Northern performers for next summer's lineup. The deadline for submissions from musicians, storytellers and dancers from NWT and Nunavut is March 1.

Each year the festival features about 25 artists from around the continent and beyond. About half are Northerners and all musical genres are considered.

Artists accepted for the festival schedule appear for one concert and participate in several workshops, jams or instructional events with the general public.

Typically, the selection committee receives about 200 submissions every year from artists around the world. Every submission is reviewed based on the quality of an artist's performance and the artist's ability to present workshop content.

Folk on the Rocks will be held July 18 to 20, 2009 at the Long Lake site in the NWT capital.

Established in 1945, News/North covered the 61 communities comprising the Northwest Territories, a 1,400.000 square mile region north of the 60th parallel. The region made up the present Northwest Territories, plus the area which, in April 1999, became the new territory of Nunavut. Since then, News/North has evolved into two separate publications, each serving its respective territory. In addition, the Yellowknifer, Deh Cho Drum, Inuvik Drum and Kivalliq News serve regional interests in both territories.
