The NWT SPCA is warning dog owners to be mindful of their pets after a number of coyote sightings in recent days. Raymond Bourget, senior wildlife officer with Environment and Natural Resources, recommends that people take the following precautions to protect their dogs from coyotes when out walking: walk in groups, avoid forming a walking routine, carry a noisemaker, stick, or bear spray, and if possible, avoid walking dogs at dusk or early morning. Bourget also recommended that people keep dogs leashed in areas coyotes are known to frequent. If approached by a coyote, do not turn your back or run away; instead, make eye contact, yell, and throw things. - Alix McNaught Games make fundraising targets The Arctic Winter Games host society announced on Feb. 19 that it had met its fundraising goal, pulling in more than $4 million in cash and gifts in kind. More than 200 sponsors pitched in during the two-year fundraising campaign for the Games, which kick off March 9. The host society also successfully recruited its target of 2,500 volunteers earlier this month. - Jess McDiarmid Weigh in on the dump A public forum will be held March 19 to get public feedback on a city proposal to build a three-cell salvage system at the landfill. Under this system, the dump would be divided into three separate areas with those open to salvaging rotating to allow machinery to work without the public in the area. It would include a waste drop-off area. The forum is hosted by the City of Yellowknife. - Jess McDiarmid |
