Weekend golfing
SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - On the heels of the Monkey Tree/Yellowknifer Million Dollar Shootout and Yellowknifer Gold Jacket golf tournaments, the Yellowknife Golf Club will have another busy weekend this coming Saturday and Sunday.
The annual Adlair Ladies Charity Golf Tournament will take place on Aug. 14. It's non-competitive fun tournament, where players dress in costumes and play the course with no real score being kept. The tournament begins at 11 a.m. and will be a shotgun start, meaning each group begins on a pre-determined hole around the course.
Aug. 15 will feature the second annual Two Nations Cup. The tournament is match play, and will pit Team Aboriginal versus Team Non-Aboriginal. Team Non-Aboriginal are the defending champions and will look to retain the cup again this year.
Merchants shut out
SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - The NWT Merchants master men's softball team wrapped up play at the 2010 Western Canadian Masters Fastball Championships in Moose Jaw, Sask., on the weekend.
The team had a chance to make the playoffs, but lost out in a tiebreaker game for fourth place on Aug. 7 to Alberta Team Three, 13-0, thus ending their tournament in fifth place. The Merchants were tied with two other teams with identical records of two wins and three losses, both wins coming over Alberta Team Two by scores of 9-4 and 6-4, respectively.
Despite the losses, a couple of former Yellowknife residents managed to scoop some hardware.
Steve Vallillee and Ray Gagnon, two former players in the Yk Men's Fastpitch League, scored a gold medal with Ladner, B.C., the eventual champions. Vallillee, who now lives in Vancouver, was the shortstop for the Ladner outfit, while Gagnon, who resides in Alberta, served as a coach.
Zacarias back on top
SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Jun Zacarias captured another win at After 8 Billiards' Saturday afternoon eight-ball tournament on Aug. 7. Zacarias was victorious over Michael Camille in the final, while Frank Beaulieu finished in third place. The next Saturday tournament will take place on Aug. 14, starting at 2:30 p.m. As always, entry is open to both men and women.
