The Aklavik Ice Road is on 72 hours notice.

An announcement was released by the GNWT in the latest Highway Update, issued 5:10 p.m. April 12.

“The Aklavik Ice Road is on 72 HOUR NOTICE OF CLOSURE!!!” reads the notice. “Depending on weather conditions it may close sooner. Historical statistics show the Aklavik ice road usually closes 3rd week in April. Please drive with care.”

Other ice crossings are currently still open. The Peel River Ice crossing at km 74 of the Dempster Highway 8 is open to traffic weighing a maximum of 64,000 kilograms. The Mackenzie River Ice crossing at km 142.6 of the Dempster Highway 8 is open to vehicles weighing a maximum of 64,000 kilograms.

Travel on the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway is limited to one lane traffic between kilometer 36 and 44. Drivers are asked to watch for equipment and drive carefully. The Dempster Highway is open, but the Yukon government has imposed a weight restriction on the Eagle River Bridge at kilometer 378 . All overweight vehicles, over 63,500 kg, or vehicles that do not meet regulatory axle weights and inter-axle spacing will be subject to review prior to crossing the bridge.
