The GNWT and the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association (NWTTA) have ratified a new collective agreement.

According to a joint news release from both sides on Wednesday afternoon, the new agreement is a three-year deal that begins retroactively to Aug. 1, 2023 and will last until July 31, 2026. It also includes a retroactive salary increase of five per cent, and an additional three per cent increase come the start of August this year and a four per cent salary hike in August 2025.

“The new collective agreement with the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association underscores our commitment to supporting our educators and enhancing the quality of education in the Northwest Territories,” stated Finance Minister Caroline Wawzonek. “We believe this partnership will lead to improved educational outcomes for our students and a stronger future for our community.”

Negotiations for a new collective agreement began in April 2023 and ended last month when both sides reached a tentative agreement.

The agreement also removed Covid-19 leave as an option; the previous agreement had that provision in there as an option.

“This agreement exemplifies a proactive approach towards addressing challenges in education, prioritizing the modernization of professional development to equip teachers with the necessary tools to effectively meet the diverse needs of students and foster a thriving learning environment across the Northwest Territories,” stated Matthew Miller, president of the NWTTA.
